Depression from job loss can be long lasting

Monday, October 14, 2002

Depression and other negative consequences from unemployment can last for up to two years after job loss, even if a person has found further employment, according US study findings. Researchers from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, investigated the link between job loss and depression, impaired functioning and poor health in a study of 756 job-seekers. Writing in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, the researchers said the “cascade of negative events” that followed job loss helped keep an individual in a prolonged state of depression.
